International Home of the Legends Thumbpicking Contest
Each year, the world’s most skilled guitarists gather in Muhlenberg County for the International Home of the Legends Thumbpicking Championship, a prestigious event that honors the rich thumbpicking tradition rooted in Kentucky. Held over a weekend at the Merle Travis Music Center, this competition brings together both seasoned pickers and rising stars to showcase their talents in both traditional and contemporary styles.

The contest follows a thrilling format where the top five competitors in each category from the preliminary round advance to the finals. The stakes are high, with the winner in each category walking away with a coveted Gretsch G5420T guitar, complete with a hardshell case.
In 2024, the International Home of the Legends Thumbpicking Weekend will take place from September 27-29 and will feature performances by renowned pickers, along with fresh faces bringing new energy to the craft. The weekend’s festivities also include a special concert by Ben Hall & Friends, ensuring a weekend filled with music, community, and celebration.
