Homer C Ledford sits by a tree with 7 different string instruments around him

Homer C Ledford Historic Marker

Ledford’s instruments—banjos, violins, guitars, mandolins, and, most famously, dulcimers—are treasures sought by musicians around the world. His creativity extended beyond tradition, with innovations like the dulcitar, an instrument he patented, and three of his masterpieces now reside in the Smithsonian Institution, immortalizing his craftsmanship for generations to come.

Beyond the workshop, Ledford was a true performer, leading the Cabin Creek Band for over 30 years, entertaining audiences across four continents and even playing for five of Kentucky’s governors. His ability to play 13 instruments made him a musical force, connecting him deeply to Kentucky’s rich traditions while helping to push them forward.

Today, Ledford’s legacy lives on as a key part of the Kentucky Music Trail, where his contributions to both music and craftsmanship continue to inspire musicians and music lovers alike. A stop at the Homer Ledford Historical Site is not just a tribute to a great artist, but to the spirit of innovation and tradition that defines Kentucky’s musical soul.
