Lyric Theater
At the corner of Third Street and Elm Tree Lane in Lexington’s historic East End, the Lyric Theatre and Cultural Arts Center stands as a testament to both Kentucky’s rich cultural history and its vibrant present. Originally opened in 1948 as a beacon for Lexington’s segregated African-American community, the Lyric was a thriving cultural hub for nearly two decades before closing its doors in 1963. After almost 50 years in disrepair, the theater was revived in 2010, reopening with a new mission to serve as a center for art, community, and education.
About This Venue
Now a landmark on the Kentucky Music Trail, the Lyric Theatre showcases a diverse array of performances and programs that honor its roots in African-American heritage while fostering growth and creativity across all communities. The theater’s 540-seat venue hosts everything from live music to film screenings, while its rotating gallery and African-American culture museum tell the stories of Kentucky’s past and present. With community-focused programs like the Lyric Black Lens Film Series and Woodsongs Old-Time Radio Hour, the Lyric continues to inspire and educate new generations.
As one of Lexington’s most cherished cultural spaces, the Lyric Theatre and Cultural Arts Center is a vital stop for those looking to explore the deep connections between Kentucky’s music, history, and culture. Whether you’re catching a live performance or walking through its vibrant galleries, the Lyric offers an immersive experience that honors its storied past while looking toward the future.
