In the rolling hills of Kentucky, a young lawyer and composer made his mark on the world of music. Born in 1812, this Kentucky native is best remembered for composing the melody to “Flow Gently, Sweet Afton,” the beloved poem by Robert Burns. While studying law at Transylvania University in 1837, he created the iconic melody that would later become one of the most cherished tunes in folk and holiday music.

This composition didn’t just fade into history—it lived on, with an adaptation of the music becoming one of the popular tunes for “Away in a Manger”, a Christmas carol often attributed to Martin Luther. Though he spent 18 years practicing law, the composer followed a calling to the ministry at age 46, leaving behind a legacy that blended his Kentucky roots with the melodies that captured the world’s attention.
