A historic marker sign

Jonathan Spilman Historic Marker

This composition didn’t just fade into history—it lived on, with an adaptation of the music becoming one of the popular tunes for “Away in a Manger”, a Christmas carol often attributed to Martin Luther. Though he spent 18 years practicing law, the composer followed a calling to the ministry at age 46, leaving behind a legacy that blended his Kentucky roots with the melodies that captured the world’s attention.

As part of the Kentucky Music Trail, this site celebrates a piece of music history that echoes through the years. From folk ballads to cherished holiday songs, the spirit of Kentucky’s rich musical heritage lives on here, inviting visitors to explore the birthplace of a melody that transcends time.
